The Village is pleased to welcome Dr. John Shribbs for an engaging discussion on Petaluma’s General Plan and how it shapes our city’s future. Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a lens, Dr. Shribbs will explore how communities—like individuals—must first meet essential needs to thrive. Just as people require food, water, safety, and connection, cities must ensure strong foundations: reliable services, safe neighborhoods, opportunities for belonging, and pathways for community growth.

Petaluma already has many strengths. We live in a beautiful watershed surrounded by agriculture, history, and open space. Our community spirit is reflected in the countless volunteers, nonprofits, and civic groups who support neighbors, protect natural resources, and celebrate our cultural vibrancy. City government plays a central role in this ecosystem, providing critical services such as water, sewer, housing, public safety, transportation (including our airport and marina), roads, utilities, parks, and recreation programs. These systems form the backbone of our collective wellbeing.

Dr. Shribbs will highlight how the Petaluma General Plan Update is guiding long-term decisions about land use, housing, climate resilience, transportation, and public spaces. Key priorities include revitalizing downtown, expanding parks and open spaces, preparing for climate impacts, and increasing housing near transit. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how these priorities influence Petaluma’s future—and how community members can stay engaged.

John Shribbs has a teaching Certificate, a PhD in Horticulture with a Statistics minor, an MS in Pest Management, BS in Biology with Chemistry minor. His career spans 25 years in horticulture and pest management, and 17 years as a high school science teacher. He has served as a volunteer and Board Director/Member for over 20 years in several local environmental nonprofits and city committees. He is the coauthor of the book “Petaluma Wetland Field Guide.”
